The Red Prince is a new variety of apple. This delicious, red, crunchy apple is grown exclusively in Thornbury, ON. It’s a cross between a Golden Delicious and a Red Jonathan and is suitable for eating on its own, for baking or for salads. However you eat it, roll out the red carpet because the Red Price is now available at Longo’s.
Also new at Longo’s are Satsuma Mandarins. I discovered these a few days ago. What caught my eye was that the leaf was still attached to the stems. They are a Japanese mandarin orange, but these ones are from California. The skin is very loose and easy to peel and they are sweet and seedless. I was speaking with customers Susan and Bruce Carlson who bought the mandarins simply because “they look like they had just been picked off the tree!”
Mandarin oranges are simply one variety of the orange family. They are typically smaller than an orange, easy to peel and pop in your mouth like a sweet candy. Mandarins are great as a snack or used in salads to add those citrus notes.
There are two unique salad recipes in the upcoming issue of Longo’s Experience magazine that I would use these Satusuma Mandarins for. Be sure to pick up your FREE copy of the Spring issue in stores on Friday February 12th!
